Filipinas qualify for FIFA Women's World Cup with 2-0 win over Uzbekistan
The Philippines made a triumphant return to the world stage on Thursday, booking their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 play-off at Gold Coast Stadium.
After their exit from the 2023 World Cup, the Filipinas came out determined.
Head coach Mark Torcaso fielded a strong lineup, blending experienced veterans—Olivia McDaniel, Angela Beard, Sara Eggesvik, Sofia Wunsch, Carleigh Frilles, Chandler McDaniel, and Katrina Guillou—with young standout Jael Marie Guy.
The first half was tightly contested, with both sides testing the goal.
Uzbekistan’s Zarina Mamatkarimova forced a save from McDaniel in the 26th minute, followed by Nilufar Kudratova firing over the crossbar.
The Philippines had their chances too, with Beard twice denied by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova.
The breakthrough came early in the second half.
Just two minutes after the restart, Beard converted a precise cross from Guy, volleying past the keeper to give the Filipinas the lead.
Five minutes later, Jaclyn Sawicki rose to meet another Guy delivery and powered home a header to double the advantage.
Torcaso, reflecting on the win, said he was “a little bit lost for words” but proud of the young squad.
“We came here with a very young squad—an average age of 23 or 24,” he said. “To have one of our future stars—someone I believe can be a star on the world stage—play so well in a big game like this and help us qualify for the World Cup is a testament to her and her family. I’m extremely proud of every single player… all the work we’ve put in has led to this moment.”
Guy, named Player of the Match, described her role in the victory, “It’s kind of a blur. When you’re in the game, you just want to get towards goal. Going into the second half, we knew we had to score—that was the goal, to win. So whenever I got the ball, I just thought: get forward, find teammates in dangerous areas.”
With the win, the Philippines join hosts Australia, Japan, China, and South Korea in qualifying for Brazil.
Chinese Taipei and North Korea will contest the final World Cup spot later today.
