Edin Džeko’s record-breaking debut
Edin Džeko made history by becoming the oldest goalscorer in Bundesliga 2 during Schalke's comeback draw against Kaiserslautern. At 39 years and 314 days old, he came off the bench in the 67th minute while his team trailed 2-0 and scored a crucial goal just 20 minutes later.
Džeko's goal, a controlled finish from a lofted cross in the 87th minute, showcased his enduring quality and ignited Schalke's fightback. His strike directly led to an equalizer from teammate Kenan Karaman just three minutes later, completing the team's late recovery.
Both Džeko and his coach, Miron Muslić, emphasized the significance of the goal. Džeko stated it reaffirmed his commitment to playing for a club of Schalke's stature, not seeing the second division as a step down. Coach Muslić, who initially planned only a 15-minute appearance for Džeko, praised the striker for restoring the team's hope and belief.
The signing of Džeko is viewed as a major asset for Schalke's promotion campaign. Club officials, including the coach and captain Karaman, highlighted his superstar status, championship experience, and individual class as vital components for helping the team return to the Bundesliga following their 2023 relegation.
