Senegal Advances to AFCON Quarter-Finals with Bundesliga Star Jackson’s Contribution
SAFCON Round of 16: Gueye’s Historic Brace Leads Senegal to 3-1 Comeback Win Over Sudan; Quarter-Final Clash With Mali Awaits.
In the AFCON 2025 Round of 16, Senegal secured a comeback victory with a 3-1 win over Sudan at the Grand Stade de Tanger, advancing to the quarter-finals. Sudan, the 1970 champions, took a surprise lead through Aamir Abdallah’s first international goal—a brilliant curling shot from outside the box.
Before halftime, Senegal turned the tide. Pape Gueye scored twice, assisted by Sadio Mané and Nicolas Jackson respectively, making him the first player in Senegal’s history to net a brace in AFCON knockout stages. With this assist, Mané surpassed Yaya Touré to become the all-time top assist provider in AFCON since 2006, with 8 assists to his name.
In the 77th minute of the second half, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the victory with a clinical finish following a fast counterattack. Gueye was substituted shortly after the break due to a first-half yellow card. After Mali edged Tunisia 3-2 in a penalty shootout, Senegal’s quarter-final opponent was confirmed, and the two teams will face off in Tangier on January 9.
