Bundesliga at AFCON: End of tournament for quartet after Osimhen’s masterclass
Four Bundesliga players from Algeria—Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund), Farès Chaïbi (Eintracht Frankfurt), Ibrahim Maza (Bayer Leverkusen), and Mohamed Amoura (VfL Wolfsburg)—are returning to their clubs following Algeria's elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations. Algeria, the two-time champions, were defeated 2-0 by Nigeria in the quarter-final.
All four players started the match, but Nigeria controlled the game. Victor Osimhen scored early in the second half and later provided an assist for Akor Adams, who netted Nigeria's second goal ten minutes later to secure the victory. The quartet could potentially be available for their Bundesliga clubs in the upcoming midweek fixtures for matchday 17.
Nigeria advances to the semi-final, where they will face Morocco. Two other Bundesliga players, Bilal El Khannouss (VfB Stuttgart) and Eliesse Ben Seghir (Bayer Leverkusen), are part of the Moroccan squad hoping to reach the final.
In the other side of the draw, RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande will start for Côte d'Ivoire in their quarter-final against Egypt. TSG Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Touré is also with the Ivorian squad and is likely to feature as a substitute, having scored in consecutive games as a super-sub. The winner of this match will face Senegal, which includes Nicolas Jackson, in the semi-final.
