Beermen begin Governors' Cup bid behind George King; NLEX eyes 3-0 start
ANTIPOLO — San Miguel Beer opens its Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors' Cup campaign Tuesday at the Ynares Center, banking on new import George King to provide an immediate spark against guest team Macau.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with the Beermen hoping to avoid another sluggish start after dropping their first two games in the Philippine Cup and opening the Commissioner's Cup with a 1-2 record.
Import instability plagued San Miguel throughout the previous conference, forcing multiple changes before the team settled on naturalization prospect Bennie Boatwright. Despite the familiarity, the Beermen bowed out in the quarterfinals to Rain or Shine.
This time, San Miguel turns to King, one of the league's most explosive imports from last season. The high-scoring wing made headlines with a 64-point performance for Blackwater and is expected to complement a veteran core headlined by nine-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez.
The Beermen hope King's arrival will help end their long wait for a Governors' Cup championship, while the prolific import is aiming for his first deep playoff run in the PBA.
Standing in their way are the Giant Pandas, who are looking to recover after absorbing a 114-75 defeat to Jimmy Alapag's NLEX in their tournament opener.
The Road Warriors, meanwhile, put their unbeaten record on the line in the 5:15 p.m. curtain-raiser as they take on Titan Ultra, seeking a third consecutive victory to strengthen their hold on the Group A lead.
NLEX enters the contest with confidence but also a reminder of how quickly games can change. The Road Warriors nearly squandered a 23-point advantage before escaping Terrafirma with a narrow 101-100 win in their previous outing.
Titan Ultra, still searching for its first victory after losses to Terrafirma and Converge, hopes to turn things around with the expected debut of import Tirrell Brown. The team played its first two games without a reinforcement but now looks to become more competitive with Brown cleared to suit up.
