Barcelona target tipped to renew contract with Bundesliga heavyweights by German legend
Former German international Lothar Matthäus has expressed confidence that Harry Kane will renew his contract with Bayern Munich, despite being a reported transfer target for FC Barcelona. Kane's current deal runs until 2027.
Barcelona is reportedly considering the 32-year-old England captain as a potential summer replacement for Robert Lewandowski, with one of the club's presidential candidates, Xavi Vilajoana, claiming there have been contacts with Kane's camp. However, Matthäus believes Kane will stay, citing the player's recent success in winning titles at Bayern—something he did not achieve in England—and seeing no reason for him to leave.
Kane joined Bayern in 2023 and has been the top scorer in each of his completed full seasons, currently leading the scoring charts again. With Bayern, he won the Bundesliga and Super Cup in 2025, and the team currently leads the league, is in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals, and the Champions League Round of 16.
Matthäus also highlighted the importance of Kane's relationship with coach Vincent Kompany and the well-functioning team at Bayern, questioning whether the striker would perform as well elsewhere. While reports of contact with Barcelona have circulated, Kane has claimed no knowledge of them.
Further indicating his commitment, Kane allowed a €65 million release clause to expire in January, a move interpreted in Germany as a sign of his willingness to remain at Bayern Munich.
