Alex Eala is back in Miami, retracing the path that launched her into the global tennis spotlight.

The 20-year-old Filipino star, who stunned the tennis world last year as a 19-year-old wildcard at the Miami Open, will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the second round of the WTA 1000 event on Wednesday (Thursday morning, Manila time) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Eala’s breakthrough last year, when she reached the semifinals after defeating three Grand Slam champions, catapulted her from world No. 140 to the upper echelons of the WTA Tour.

Now ranked a career-high 29th and seeded 31st in this year’s tournament, she earned a first-round bye and carries high expectations for another deep run.

The stakes are significant.

Points from last year’s Miami Open are set to drop off her ranking this month, and an early exit could see her slip back into the high 40s.

Her opponent, 38-year-old Siegemund, is the oldest player ranked inside the top 55, currently world No. 53.

The German veteran remains dangerous, as shown by her quarterfinal run at last year’s Wimbledon, where she pushed world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to three tight sets.

Known for her crafty game—mixing slices, drop shots, lobs, and sudden net rushes—Siegemund is a master of disrupting opponents’ rhythm.

To advance, Eala must take control of the tempo, dictating rallies and preventing the German from prolonging exchanges.

Success will set her up for a third-round showdown with one of two Polish stars: second seed Iga Swiatek or Magda Linette.

Miami may once again prove to be the stage where Eala defines her rise in women’s tennis.
