Abra rolls past Basilan, Binan storms back to stun Pasay
Defending champion Abra and Binan delivered victories in contrasting fashion during Friday's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 2026 Season triple-header at the Pasay Astrodome.
The Abra Solid North Weavers overwhelmed Basilan Steel, 119-70, while Binan Tatak Gel rallied late to escape the Pasay Voyagers, 77-74, in the nightcap of the round-robin elimination phase.
Abra showcased its depth with 14 players scoring as it cruised to its 10th straight victory, improving to 12-1 in the North Division and keeping the pressure on league-leading Caloocan (13-1).
Reigning Most Valuable Player Dave Ildefonso spearheaded the Weavers with 23 points, five rebounds, and five assists. DJ Fenner added 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Mike Ayonayon contributed 11 points and four assists. Homegrown forward Rodel Fabro also finished in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
Basilan dropped to 7-8, with John Wilson leading the team with 12 points, while Mark Montuano added 10.
In the second game, Binan erased a 71-66 deficit with just over two minutes remaining by unleashing an 11-3 finishing run to steal the victory from Pasay.
Nic Cabanero sparked the comeback with five points in the closing stretch, while Kenny Roger Rocacurva added four as Binan stretched its winning streak to nine games and improved to 11-3 in the South Division.
Cabanero turned in an all-around performance with 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Warren Bonifacio posted 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Rocacurva finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Pasay slipped to 8-7 despite a double-double from Christian Fajarito, who recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals. Lenard Santiago also came close to a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
