Giancarlo González
Sporting FC/D/
Player Info
Giancarlo González is a veteran Costa Rican center-back who provides defensive leadership for Sporting FC, bringing a wealth of international experience to the backline. Known as "Pipo," his career took off after moving from Alajuelense to Norwegian side Vålerenga, but his breakthrough came with a transfer to the Columbus Crew in MLS. His impressive 2014 World Cup performances earned him a move to Italian giants Palermo, and he later played for Bologna and LA Galaxy. A mainstay for Los Ticos for over a decade, he played every minute of their memorable 2014 World Cup quarterfinal run. His honors include CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and domestic successes in Costa Rica. González is a classic, physically strong defender, excellent in the air and in last-ditch tackles. Now in the twilight of his career, he remains a savvy and composed presence, using his intelligence to organize the defense and mentor younger players.
