Match Info

IFK Norrköping FK were forced to settle for a point after an entertaining 2-2 draw with Ljungskile in the Swedish Superettan. The hosts appeared to be on course for all three goals after twice taking the lead, but Ljungskile kept fighting and equalised at the death to claim what could be a crucial point in their season.

A game of two penalties

Norrköping controlled much of the early possession, and their first goal came with a touch of fortune. A darting run into the box was brought to an end by a clumsy challenge, and the referee pointed to the spot. The home side converted calmly to give themselves the lead they deserved. Ljungskile struggled to get any foothold, but just before the hour they stunned the home crowd with a breakaway goal that began in their own defensive third.

The second period continued at an intense tempo. Norrköping regained control and again won a penalty after a VAR review as a Ljungskile defender was adjudged to have handled the ball. The spot kick was dispatched to make it 2-1, and it looked as though the hosts would see the game out without any further alarms.

Late drama for Ljungskile

With the clock ticking towards the 90-minute mark, Ljungskile threw bodies forward. Their persistence paid off in the third minute of stoppage time, when a scrappy goalmouth scramble ended with the ball being bundled over the line. The travelling support erupted, while Norrköping were left to rue their failure to kill the tie when they were on top.

The draw feels like a setback for Norrköping in their pursuit of promotion, but there were plenty of positives in their overall play. Ljungskile, meanwhile, will take enormous confidence from their resilience and refusal to lose, especially against one of the finer sides in the Superettan.

Standings impact

Dropping points at home will hurt Norrköping’s ambition to close the gap to the automatic promotion spots. Ljungskile remain in the lower half of the table but have proved they can match the division’s strongest teams. The result is a fair reflection of a match where both sides showed character and offensive ambition.
