Match Info

Union Saint-Gilloise produced an exhilarating comeback to beat RC Sporting Charleroi 3-2 in a Belgian Pro League classic at the Stade du Pays de Charleroi on Saturday night. The hosts led twice, but their visitors’ relentless attacking depth finally proved decisive, sealing a victory that keeps Union at the summit of the championship race while deepening Charleroi’s early-season frustration.

Charleroi’s bright start rewarded

In front of a passionate home crowd, Charleroi began with real intent and deservedly opened the scoring inside the first twenty minutes. A slick passing move down the left side left the Union defence exposed, and striker Daan Heymans arrived at the back post to convert a teasing low cross. The Zebras’ press forced Union into several uncharacteristic errors, and it seemed that the visitors might be vulnerable following their midweek European exertions.

Union gradually settled into their rhythm, showing why they remain one of the most exciting sides in Belgian football. Their equaliser came just before the half-hour mark when Mohamed Amoura latched onto a through-ball, held off his marker, and produced a clinical finish across the keeper. The goal changed the momentum, and the remainder of the first half was played on Union’s terms, even if Charleroi’s organisation kept the score level at the interval.

A frantic second half

Charleroi began the second period with renewed confidence and regained their lead on 54 minutes through a brilliantly worked set-piece. A corner delivery was flicked on to the far post where Stelios Andreou rose highest to nod home, silencing the travelling Union fans. But their advantage lasted only six minutes as Union substitute Gustaf Nilsson equalised with his first touch, turning in a rebound after the Charleroi goalkeeper had spilled a powerful strike.

From that point, there looked to be only one winner. Union pushed forward with purpose and finally took complete control of the match in the 78th minute when Cameron Puertas, so often the heartbeat of this side, curled a magnificent shot into the top corner from the edge of the box. Charleroi had no answer, and the final whistle confirmed an emotional turnaround victory for the visitors.

Union’s title credentials continue to grow

The result extends Union Saint-Gilloise’s unbeaten league run and further cements their reputation as genuine challengers for the Belgian Pro League title. Under pressure in a hostile atmosphere, they showed character and attacking courage, a sign of a squad maturing under the guidance of coach Alexander Blessin. Nilsson’s impact from the bench was particularly striking, underlining the depth available to the club as they juggle domestic and continental commitments.

For Charleroi, this will be a bitter pill to swallow. Leading twice at home showed that they can compete with the top sides, but their inability to close out matches remains a concern. Defensive lapses – particularly in the lead-up to Union’s two second-half goals – have now cost them valuable points, and manager Felice Mazzù will demand sharper concentration in the coming weeks.

Match heroes

  • Cameron Puertas – His winning goal was a moment of pure quality, capping a busy performance in midfield.
  • Daan Heymans – Gave Charleroi early hope with a well-taken opener and never stopped working across the attacking line.
  • Mohamed Amoura – His equaliser was the turning point of the match, showing pace, strength and composure in equal measure.

Saturday night’s five-goal thriller will be remembered long after the points are added up. Union Saint-Gilloise strengthened their position at the top of the table, but Charleroi also demonstrated that they can pose a genuine challenge in this division. On this evidence, the Pro League title race looks set to be as thrilling as the action on the pitch.
