FC Neftci Baku claimed a dramatic 3-2 away victory over Shamakhi FK in the Azerbaijan Premier League on 1 November 2026. A late winning goal settled a five-goal contest that swung back and forth, giving Neftci Baku an important three points on the road.

Neftci Baku started strongly and built a two-goal lead, but Shamakhi FK fought back impressively to level the match. Just when a draw seemed likely, the visitors found a decisive late moment to take all three points.

Match overview

The away side were the sharper team in the opening half-hour, pressing Shamakhi FK high and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas. Neftci Baku’s wide players caused problems with their direct running, and the early pressure was rewarded with two well-taken goals.

Shamakhi FK responded well before half-time, pulling one goal back and gaining confidence. After the interval, the home side pushed more numbers forward and equalised with a well-worked move. The match looked set for a draw, but Neftci Baku found one final attacking surge to claim the winner.

• 12th minute: Neftci Baku took the lead with a composed finish after a turnover in midfield.
• 28th minute: The visitors doubled their advantage, finishing off a quick move down the right flank.
• 41st minute: Shamakhi FK pulled one back with a close-range strike that gave the home crowd renewed hope.

Tactical story

Neftci Baku’s pressing game was effective in the first half, but it also left them exposed when Shamakhi FK managed to play through the initial pressure. The home side’s response showed character, and their willingness to commit bodies forward turned the game into an open contest.

In the end, Neftci Baku’s greater efficiency in the final third proved decisive. They had fewer clear chances after the break but made the most of the decisive one, while Shamakhi FK were left to rue a handful of missed opportunities during their strongest spell.

Standout performers

Neftci Baku’s forward line was the difference, with the centre-forward heavily involved in the first two goals and the winning strike coming from a late run into the box. Shamakhi FK’s playmaker was excellent in the second half, driving the comeback with incisive passing and intelligent movement.

Both goalkeepers made important saves, but the defensive errors that led to the goals will give both coaching staffs plenty to review. In a match of this intensity, the small margins in transition proved decisive.

What the result means

The away win strengthens Neftci Baku’s position in the Azerbaijan Premier League standings and provides a timely confidence boost. Winning away from home after conceding an equaliser is the kind of result that can shape a season.

Shamakhi FK will be disappointed to take nothing from a game in which they fought back so strongly. The performance showed spirit and attacking quality, but the late defensive lapse cost them a point. Both sides now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures.
