Universitas Trisakti: A Basketball Tradition in the Heart of Jakarta
Universitas Trisakti, located in Jakarta, Indonesia, boasts one of the most storied basketball programs among Indonesian universities. Known as Trisakti Eagles, the team competes in the Indonesian University Basketball League (LIBAMA) and is famous for its passionate fan base, known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” which packs the campus gymnasium during home games.
Program History and Prestige
Basketball at Trisakti dates back to the 1970s, but the modern era began in the 2000s when the university started heavily investing in sports to complement its strong academic reputation. The Eagles have won the LIBAMA Jakarta regional championship five times and reached the national final twice, in 2015 and 2019, establishing themselves as a perennial contender. The program’s alumni include several players who transitioned to Indonesia’s professional IBL, such as former point guard Bima Sakti.
Playing Style and Coaching Philosophy
Under head coach Yanto Hermawan (since 2021), Trisakti employs an up-tempo system that prioritizes transition offense and aggressive full-court pressing. The team thrives on creating turnovers and converting them into quick scores. On defense, they emphasize switching and help rotations, rarely giving up easy baskets. This style has made them one of the most exciting teams in LIBAMA.
Current Roster and Stars
This season’s squad is headlined by small forward Fajar Nugroho, a versatile 6’6” athlete who can score inside and out. He averaged 22 points and 8 rebounds in the 2023–24 campaign. Point guard Rian Wirawan is the engine, with 7 assists per game and a deadly mid-range jumper. Off the bench, shooting guard Doni Prasetyo provides instant offense, shooting 38% from beyond the arc.
- Fajar Nugroho – SF, 6’6”, leading scorer
- Rian Wirawan – PG, assists leader
- Doni Prasetyo – SG, three-point specialist
Rivalries and Fan Atmosphere
No game is bigger for Trisakti than the annual clash against Universitas Bina Nusantara (BINUS), a rivalry known as the “Jakarta Derby.” These games often draw over 2,000 spectators to the Trisakti Sport Center and have produced dramatic last-second finishes. The Eagles also have heated matchups with Universitas Tarumanagara and Universitas Pelita Harapan, making the Jakarta university basketball scene highly competitive.
Future Ambitions
The Trisakti administration aims to win a national LIBAMA title within the next three seasons. Plans are in place to upgrade training facilities, hire additional assistant coaches, and expand scouting networks across Java. With a rich history, strong fan support, and talented players, the Trisakti Eagles are flying high and looking to soar even higher.
