Finals Loom: Did Marcial Deliver an Ultimatum to Referees?
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial announced that a meeting will be held before the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals between the referees and the head coaches or representatives from the competing teams, San Miguel and TNT. The purpose is to ensure clear officiating and prevent any issues during the championship series.
This initiative follows the recent suspension of referee Jeff Tantay, who missed a crucial foul call in the dying seconds of a semifinal game between TNT and Meralco. Commissioner Marcial emphasized that referees must be fully prepared for high-stakes playoff games, stating that suspensions or dismissals are possible for errors.
The best-of-seven finals series is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 21, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
