UAAP Final Four Rules: Format and Playoff Tiebreakers
College format switches to a stepladder system. In this case, the undefeated team goes straight to the finals, while the other teams play knockout games for a chance to challenge them.
The Standard Semifinal Format
If no team wins all their elimination games, the top four teams play in cross-over semifinals. The first seed plays the fourth seed, and the second seed plays the third seed.
The first and second seeds need just one win in the semifinals to reach the Finals.
The third and fourth seeds must win two games in a row against higher-ranked teams to move forward.
The semifinal winners play each other in a best-of-three series to decide the champion.
The Stepladder Exception
If a team wins all 14 elimination games, known as a "sweep," the stepladder format is used. This system changes the playoff matchups and gives the sweeping team a more direct path to the championship.
The team that sweeps the eliminations goes straight to the Finals. Depending on the season, they either get a "thrice-to-beat" advantage, starting with a 1-0 lead in a best-of-five, or play a regular best-of-three series.
The third and fourth seeds play a single-elimination game. The winner advances to the next round, and the loser is eliminated from the championship race.
The winner of the third versus fourth seed game then faces the second seed, who has a twice-to-beat advantage.
If a team beats the twice-to-beat second seed, they become the stepladder finalist and earn the chance to challenge the waiting top seed for the championship.
Breaking the Ties
Tiebreaker games are common when teams are close in the standings. The league has rules to decide who makes the playoffs or gets a better seed.
Playoff for the Fourth Seed: If two teams are tied for fourth place, they play a sudden-death game to decide who gets the last Final Four spot.
Playoff for the Second Seed: If two teams are tied for second place, they play a game to decide who gets the twice-to-beat advantage.
Quotient System: For ties that do not affect the last playoff spot or the twice-to-beat advantage, such as a tie for first or third place, the league usually uses the FIBA-style quotient system. This system looks at the points scored and allowed by the tied teams.
The Road to the Championship
The UAAP postseason rewards strong teams but also allows for surprising upsets. The rules ensure that all the effort in the elimination round still counts in the playoffs. No matter the format, the road to the championship is challenging and always has the potential to make new college basketball history.
