The Loophole That Brought Mike Conley Back to Minnesota

On February 18, according to HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto, sources revealed that the Minnesota Timberwolves have re-signed veteran Mike Conley for the remainder of the season.

Prior to this season's trade deadline, the Timberwolves traded Conley to the Chicago Bulls, who then sent him to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets eventually waived him.

Under NBA rules, a player who is traded and then waived by his new team is ineligible to re-sign with his original team before the season ends. However, since Conley was first traded to the Bulls and then to the Hornets, his most recent team at the time of waiving was the Bulls, not the Timberwolves. Therefore, his re-signing with the Timberwolves this season complies with league regulations.

In his four seasons with the Timberwolves before this move, Conley averaged 9.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1 steal per game, with an impressive 41.3% three-point shooting percentage. This season, he posted 4.4 points and 2.9 assists in 18.5 minutes per contest.
