Rockets star's explicit outburst toward female ref sparks apology
Houston Rockets star Alperen Şengün was ejected from a game against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, after appearing to direct a profane insult at female referee Jenna Reneau. The incident occurred following an out-of-bounds call against him.
Following a subsequent Rockets victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, Şengün addressed the incident. He stated that he apologized to Reneau after the game, acknowledging he should have known better and attributing his actions to the heat of the moment. He reported that the apology was accepted.
It remains uncertain if Şengün will face further discipline from the NBA. Despite the incident, he was announced on Sunday as an All-Star Game replacement, marking the second All-Star selection of his career. For the season, he is averaging 20.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
The Rockets' record improved to 32-19 after the win over the Thunder, placing them fourth in the Western Conference standings.
