Rivero Drops 40 as Fuel Masters Hand Dyip Their First Loss
Ricci Rivero delivered a career-best performance, scoring a remarkable 40 points to lead the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a dominant 133-105 victory over Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Ynares Center.
Rivero set the tone early, exploding for 21 points in the first half. He finished with seven three-pointers, six rebounds, and eight assists, fueling Phoenix's strong second-quarter surge that transformed a tight game into a commanding lead. The Fuel Masters never looked back after taking control, handing Terrafirma its first loss of the conference and improving to a 3-1 record, tying the Dyip in the standings. However, Phoenix's convincing win allowed them to leapfrog Terrafirma in the rankings.
Phoenix head coach Charles Tiu emphasized the importance of momentum as the conference moves forward. "We’re just trying to rack up some wins. Our goal is to push for the playoffs. The Phoenix franchise has been hungry for a playoff spot," Tiu said.
The Fuel Masters shot an impressive 52.8 percent from the field and knocked down 19 three-pointers. They exploded for 40 points in the third quarter, further distancing themselves from Terrafirma.
Ef Escandor contributed 20 points, most of which came in the fourth quarter to help Phoenix finish strong. James Dickey III recorded a double-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block. Evan Nelle added 14 points, while Prince Caperal chipped in with 11, as Phoenix placed five players in double figures.
“Our shooting was great. I wish we could shoot like this every game,” Tiu remarked.
Terrafirma’s Jerrick Ahanmisi put up a game-high 37 points, but the Dyip lacked support from their local players. Import Mubashar Ali, the focal point of Phoenix's defense, contributed 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds but struggled offensively.
Phoenix will now enjoy a break before returning to action against the NLEX Road Warriors on April 5 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Terrafirma, on the other hand, faces a tough stretch ahead with matchups against the Magnolia Hotshots, TNT Tropang Giga, and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
