Clutch Free Throws Save the Day: San Miguel Escapes Ginebra's Late Surge
The San Miguel Beermen narrowly defeated the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings 115-109 in Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals, despite nearly squandering a 17-point lead. The victory puts San Miguel one win away from advancing to the finals.
San Miguel built a substantial lead, going up by as many as 17 points. They extended their advantage to 107-90 in the fourth quarter, fueled by a strong third-quarter three-point shooting performance and key contributions from Marcio Lassiter. However, Barangay Ginebra mounted a fierce comeback in the final period, led by RJ Abarrientos. A late three-pointer from Abarrientos cut the deficit to just two points, 111-109, with 13.4 seconds remaining.
June Mar Fajardo sealed the win for San Miguel by making two crucial free throws. Ginebra's final possession ended in a turnover by Abarrientos, securing the victory for the Beermen. Fajardo led San Miguel with 21 points and 11 rebounds, breaking out of a recent scoring slump. He was supported by CJ Perez (20 points), Mo Tautuaa (18 points), Marcio Lassiter (16 points), and Don Trollano (13 points).
For Barangay Ginebra, Scottie Thompson posted a strong all-around performance with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. RJ Abarrientos and Stephen Holt added 18 and 17 points respectively in the losing effort.
