MPBL Commissioner's Update: Rule Changes for 2026 Season
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League is entering a new era with Commissioner Emmerson Oreta leading the way. With Kenneth Duremdes now serving as league president, the commissioner’s office plans to strengthen the league’s structure and build stronger connections with fans. These changes highlight the MPBL’s commitment to raising professional standards in regional basketballacross the Philippines.
One of the main changes in this new era is a set of rules aimed at making the postseason more competitive. Oreta, who used to lead league operations, said the 2026 season will focus on being more transparent and using a tougher format. These updates follow a preseason invitational where new officiating protocols were tried out.
Besides the changes on the court, the league will now feature 27 active teams to keep the competition strong. This move should help prevent one-sided games and give fans more exciting matchups each night. With the regular season starting on April 10, here are the main changes shaping the league’s future.
Expanding the Finals and Playoff Structure
The biggest change is that the National Finals will now follow a best-of-seven format. This means the champion will need to prove both endurance and smart strategy to win.
•Best-of-Seven Finals: To win the National Finals, a team now needs four wins, similar to many top international leagues.
•Division Openers: For the first time, both the North and South divisions will begin their seasons together. This aims to attract more media coverage and get more local fans involved.
•Play-in Tournament: Starting in October, there will be an official play-in round. Teams that don’t qualify directly for the playoffs will play extra games for one last chance to get in. This gives teams in the middle of the standings another shot at making the postseason.
Intensified Integrity Measures
Oreta is putting game integrity first. Along with founder Manny Pacquiao, the league is working harder to stop game-fixing and unsportsmanlike behavior, and is also updating the officiating staff.
The league’s technical leaders are now hiring new referees, who must pass tough physical and mental training. By making officiating more professional, the MPBL hopes to reduce controversial calls that have sometimes taken attention away from the players.
Roster and Team Dynamics
The 2026 season will feature the debut of the Meycauayan Marilao Gems, and several teams have rebranded to better reflect their local communities. These changes are more than just new names or logos. They aim to improve financial stability and gain more support from local governments.
•Refined Team Count: With 27 teams, the schedule is now balanced so every team plays each other once in a 26-game regular season.
•Professional Licensing: College players still need a Special Guest License to play, which helps connect amateur talent with the professional league.
•Safety and Support: The "MPBL Kalinga" program remains a top priority. It provides medical help and security for players and staff, making sure they are cared for during the long 351-game season.
The Road to the 2026 Championship
The 2026 season is expected to be the toughest in league history. With a new commissioner focused on raising the level of play, the MPBL wants to become Asia’s top regional league. Opening games in Caloocan and Biñan will start a season of faster games, better officiating, and a longer road to the championship. Every play will count, leading up to finals in December that will test every team.
