In the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series hosted in Manila, Manila Gilas’ journey ended prematurely after a tough qualifying round on Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

Led by National University standouts Afril Bernardino, Kaye Pingol, Ann Pingol, and Sam Harada, the Filipinas suffered consecutive defeats against Warsaw and Team USA, missing out on a place in the main draw.

Manila Gilas opened with a 14-9 loss to Warsaw, struggling to contend with the European team’s size and physicality. Bernardino led the squad with four points, while Kaye Pingol contributed three.

The team showed more determination in their second match but ultimately fell 21-12 to Team USA. The Americans relied on the scoring prowess of Joyce Edwards, Milaysia Fulwiley, and Mikaylah Williams to sweep the qualifying round and secure a spot in Pool C of the main draw alongside Gilas Women and Germany.

Despite the setbacks, Kaye noted that competing against world-class opponents was a confidence booster for the team.

“Maybe we gained confidence because we faced them. This is a big deal and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said.

The tournament was also a special milestone for the Pingol sisters, who got to play together on the international stage.

“I’m so excited that the Women’s Series is finally here and even happier to be teammates with Ann,” Kaye shared.

“Dream come true. We’ve been waiting a long time to play together. We’re grateful for this opportunity,” added Ann.

Meanwhile, Mongolia emerged victorious from the other qualifying bracket, defeating Singapore and Indonesia to advance to Pool D.
