The New York Knicks did not pursue a major trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo at the deadline, instead focusing on stability, which slightly improved their odds to win the Eastern Conference. They are now co-favorites with the Cleveland Cavaliers at +340 to reach the NBA Finals.

To address backcourt depth with Miles McBride injured, the Knicks traded for guard Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans, sending out Dalen Terry and two second-round picks. Alvarado is expected to provide perimeter defense and energy off the bench as a backup to Jalen Brunson.

The Cleveland Cavaliers made significant moves to enter a "win-now" phase, trading away Darius Garland, De'Andre Hunter, and Lonzo Ball to acquire James Harden, Keon Ellis, and Dennis Schroder. Harden, despite being 36, is averaging more points than Garland this season.

The Detroit Pistons, the current East leaders, saw their championship odds drop from +320 to +360 after the trade deadline. They acquired Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric in a three-team trade earlier in the week.

In the standings, the Knicks trail the Pistons by five games and are tied for second with the Boston Celtics, while the Cavaliers are 7.5 games back in fourth place.
