John Abate has signed a one-year contract with the Quezon Huskers of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). The deal includes an opt-out clause, allowing him to pursue professional opportunities abroad if they arise.

This move follows Abate's full recovery from injuries that ended his collegiate career in the UAAP. During his time with the UE Red Warriors, he was a key player and team captain, averaging over 16 points, nearly five rebounds, and more than four assists per game in UAAP Season 88 before his season was cut short.

The Quezon Huskers, based in Lucena and competing in the MPBL's South Division, were revived for the league in 2023. The team has been competitive, reaching the MPBL finals in 2025 as South Division champions. Under coach Eric Gonzales, the Huskers are known for a balanced roster and for developing emerging talent.

For Abate, represented by Phenom Sports Management, joining the Huskers is a strategic step toward his long-term professional goals. It provides a competitive environment to refine his skills, while the opt-out clause maintains flexibility for future opportunities in larger leagues or overseas.
