Hotshots Comeback to Hand Dyip Their Second Straight Loss
Magnolia overcame a slow start in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner's Cup, rallying from behind to defeat Terrafirma 85-70 on Tuesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
After losing their first three games of the midseason conference, the Hotshots have now found their rhythm, securing back-to-back wins. This momentum could be just what they need heading into their upcoming Manila Clasico battle against Barangay Ginebra this Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Head coach LA Tenorio emphasized the importance of building momentum, saying, "We'll be ready, definitely—not just because it’s Ginebra or the Manila Clasico, but because we need to prepare. We're still below .500 in the standings."
With the win, Magnolia improves to 2-3 on the season.
Import Clint Chapman was the star of the night for the Hotshots, delivering a dominant 28-point, 11-rebound, 3-assist performance. He also contributed a steal and two blocks in 34 minutes, playing a key role in Magnolia's turnaround.
Zav Lucero chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds, while veteran Rome Dela Rosa added 11 points, six boards, two steals, and a block—all without turning the ball over—showcasing the impact of the Hotshots' experienced core.
Paul Lee scored eight points in a rare start, and Mark Barroca dished out five points, five rebounds, and nine assists, helping Magnolia finish with a team-high 27 assists.
Lee ignited a crucial 9-3 run early in the fourth quarter, giving Magnolia a 71-59 lead that eventually grew to 83-66 with just 1:24 remaining, sealing the victory.
Tenorio praised his veteran players despite the team’s rocky start, saying, "I don’t have any issue with my vets. Even if they play poorly, they’re still my vets. They’ll get their minutes."
For Terrafirma, Jerrick Ahanmisi led the way with 21 points, while Mubashar Ali posted 18 points and 18 rebounds but struggled with efficiency. Maverick Ahanmisi and former Magnolia player Joseph Eriobu each added 11 points as the Dyip dropped their second consecutive game following a strong 3-0 start.
Magnolia’s win extends their mini-streak and sets up a thrilling Manila Clasico clash with Ginebra later this week.
