Horford: My Celtics Departure Was Deeper Than the Game
On February 20, in an NBA regular-season game, the Boston Celtics defeated the Golden State Warriors 121-110 on the road.
Al Horford, the Warriors center and former Celtics player, revealed that his decision to leave Boston was about something deeper than basketball. However, he is not ready to reveal the truth just yet.
“There are things I will tell everyone at some point, but for me, I felt it was time to go somewhere else,” Horford said.
When he left Boston during the offseason, Horford did not say anything negative about the team. He stated his main reason for leaving was that “they just couldn’t offer me the opportunity I was looking for.”
Horford admitted that while money was a factor in his decision to join the Warriors, the uncertainty surrounding the team’s future was more important.
“I think the financial part was one factor, but more importantly, it was about winning, competing for championships,” Horford said in October 2025.
“I think a lot was up in the air at that time — and it felt like their vision was different, obviously, with [Tatum] being injured, that hit the team hard. So I think at that point, I really had to — before that, I fully intended on staying in Boston.”
