Fernandez Defeats Eala in Straight Sets in First Career Meeting
The highly anticipated debut clash between Alex Eala and Leylah Fernandez didn’t live up to expectations, as the Canadian star relied on her experience to secure a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win in the first round of the 2026 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Tuesday (Manila time).
Ranked No. 25 in the world, Fernandez, who has Filipino roots through her father, took control early on the indoor clay courts of the Porsche-Arena. The match featured two left-handed baseliners known for their defensive skills and ability to absorb pressure, but it was Fernandez who dictated the tempo throughout.
The encounter largely revolved around consistency and the ability to turn defense into offense, areas where Fernandez was the sharper player from the start.
Eala struggled with her rhythm in the first set, committing several unforced errors that allowed Fernandez to break serve twice and jump to a 5-0 lead. Although Eala managed to hold serve in the sixth game, Fernandez wrapped up the set in just 36 minutes.
The second set saw a brief change in momentum as Eala took a 1-0 lead, but Fernandez responded by winning three straight games to regain control and stretch her lead to 5-2.
Despite the deficit, Eala fought back, breaking Fernandez in the eighth game and holding serve to close the gap to 5-4. The Filipina even threatened to force a deciding set, racing to a 30-0 advantage in the tenth game. However, Fernandez remained composed, held serve, and closed out the match after one hour and 29 minutes.
The win propels Fernandez into a likely second-round matchup against either eighth seed and world No. 6 Jasmine Paolini of Italy or Turkish qualifier Zeynep Sönmez.
For Eala, the loss marks another tough outing on clay as she looks to regroup and prepare for the upcoming WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open next week.
