Fajardo vs. Bol Bol steals the spotlight in Beermen-Tropang 5G showdown
All eyes will be on the highly anticipated first-ever showdown between nine-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo and TNT's towering 7-foot-3 import, Bol Bol, as San Miguel faces TNT tonight at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
With both teams holding 1-1 records, this match serves as a rematch of the last two Philippine Cup Finals, where the Beermen will aim to maintain their dominance over the Tropang 5G, much like their previous championship victories.
The Casino Plus sportsbook has set the game as nearly a toss-up, with the Beermen slight -2.5 favorites. The over/under is set at 204.5.
It will be intriguing to see how TNT head coach Chot Reyes utilizes Bol Bol’s size and versatility against a formidable opponent, especially after his standout 40-point, 15-rebound performance in their victory over NLEX.
For Fajardo, he acknowledges that stopping the former NBA player from South Sudan will require a team effort.
“For sure mahihirapan kami. Pero five-on-five naman ito, hindi naman ito one-on-one,” Fajardo said. “Pero kung matapat sa akin si Bol, gagawin ko yung best ko na ma-stop siya. Hindi ko man siya ma-totally stop, at least ma-limit ko man lang siya.”
Fans are also eagerly anticipating how San Miguel's Marcus Lee will match up against Bol Bol. After a tough debut, Lee bounced back with 10 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and three blocks to help the Beermen secure their first win against the FiberXers. Many are curious if he can replicate or even elevate his performance in this critical clash.
Lee, however, might be playing in his final game with San Miguel, as the team has already reached an agreement with Justin Patton as a potential replacement.
Before the highly anticipated 7:30 p.m. clash, the spotlight will shift to the 5:15 p.m. game between Magnolia and guest team Macau, both teams hungry for their first win of the season.
Magnolia enters the game as heavy favorites, with their new import Clint Chapman making his PBA debut. The Hotshots are favored by -4.5 points, with the over/under set at 201.
Chapman, the 6-foot-10 former Texas Longhorn, was brought in to replace Nuni Omot. His debut will be crucial as he attempts to turn around Magnolia's rough start to the season.
Macau, still searching for their first win, will rely on former ABL MVP Marcus Elliott, who has taken over as the club's new head coach after Garrett Kelly’s departure. Elliott's first task will be to guide the Black Knights to victory after tough losses to Converge, Rain or Shine, and Ginebra.
