Eala bows out of Miami Open in fourth round
Alex Eala saw her campaign in the WTA 1000 Miami Open come to a halt after a dominant fourth-round loss to Czech star Karolína Muchová, 6-0, 6-2, on Monday evening (Manila time).
Facing one of the tour’s most in-form and versatile players, Eala struggled to establish any rhythm as Muchová imposed her game from the outset.
The 13th seed, who has been among the winningest players on tour this season following her title run at the Qatar Open, showcased her all-around brilliance in a clinical performance.
Playing at the Grandstand of Hard Rock Stadium, Muchová dictated the tempo early, mixing pace and angles to keep the 20-year-old Filipina off balance.
The 29-year-old needed just 24 minutes to claim the opening set, blanking Eala with a swift 6-0 start.
The momentum carried over into the second frame, where Muchová extended her run to 10 consecutive games to build a commanding 4-0 lead.
Eala managed to halt the surge by holding serve in the fifth game, avoiding a shutout, but the Czech quickly regained control to close out the match in just over an hour.
The defeat marked a tough end to Eala’s Miami stint, especially after her breakthrough showing in last year’s tournament where she reached the semifinals.
In the 2025 edition, she turned heads with wins over three Grand Slam champions in a stunning run.
Eala is set to take a brief break before transitioning to the clay-court season, with her next appearance slated for the Upper Austria Ladies Linz beginning on April 6.
