Meralco Bolts have chosen Ismael Romero as their import for the upcoming PBA Commissioner's Cup, despite his recent controversial incident. During a match in the Dubai International Basketball Championships in January, Romero kicked a fallen opponent, Nick Demusis, which led to his ban from that tournament and calls for his exclusion from the PBA.

Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo acknowledged Romero's mistake and expressed hope that he would apologize and be given a second chance. Trillo emphasized that Romero must now conduct himself better as part of the team, noting that other players have been banned and later reinstated after demonstrating good behavior.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial plans to speak with Romero once his signing is official. Romero can look to former PBA import Renaldo Balkman as an example of redemption; Balkman was banned for an on-court altercation in 2013 but returned five years later and led his team to the finals in 2018.
