Dominant Edge? Beermen’s Coach Cools Expectations
The San Miguel Beermen hold a significant historical advantage over the TNT Tropang 5G, with a 6-1 head-to-head record in their past PBA championship meetings. Their upcoming clash in the 2026 Philippine Cup Finals will mark the eighth time these teams compete for a title, with the Beermen aiming for a seventh crown against this opponent.
Despite their dominant record, which includes Philippine Cup victories in 2022 and 2025, Beermen coach Leo Austria cautioned that defending their title will not be easy, noting heightened public expectations and TNT's strong performance in the semifinals. The Beermen advanced to the finals by defeating the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings 4-2 in their semifinal series.
The TNT Tropang 5G enter the finals shorthanded due to significant injuries, with key players RR Pogoy (hamstring) and Kelly Williams (ankle) unavailable. However, coach Chot Reyes expressed confidence in the team's reinforced depth, citing additions like Calvin Oftana and Rey Nambatac to address roster challenges. TNT is appearing in its fourth consecutive conference finals, while San Miguel is in its fourth straight Philippine Cup finals.
The finals series is set to begin with Game 1 on Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo. The Beermen will rely on their star players, including nine-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, C.J. Perez, and Marcio Lassiter, as they seek another championship.
