Anthony Simonsen Leads Round 1 of Go Bowling U.S. Open
The Go Bowling U.S. Open is underway, with qualifying held from March 1-7 and the finals scheduled for March 8. The tournament, featuring a $100,000 top prize, is taking place at Royal Pin Woodland in Indianapolis.
After the first round of qualifying, Anthony Simonsen leads the 108-player field with a total pinfall of 1,871 (+271) over eight games, averaging over 233. He expressed satisfaction with his strong start, which alleviates pressure for the subsequent rounds.
Dom Barrett ranks second with a score of 1,835, followed closely by Jason Sterner in third. Malaysia's Tun Hakim, who bowled the day's only perfect 300 game, sits in fourth, with Ethan Fiore rounding out the top five.
Simonsen, who bowled in the C-squad, noted an advantage in observing the earlier A- and B-squads navigate the 40-foot oil pattern. He studied other players' strategies, including EJ Tackett's approach, to inform his own game plan as lane conditions evolved.
Simonsen has a successful history at Royal Pin Woodland, having won the 2016 USBC Masters and the 2022 U.S. Open at this venue. He has made the U.S. Open finals every year since the tournament returned there in 2022 and holds deep personal connections to the location.
