Alex Eala Falls to Ostapenko in Linz Round of 16
Alex Eala’s run at the 2026 Upper Austria Ladies Linz came to an end with a hard-fought defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16.
The unseeded Filipina player saw two big leads slip away before eventually losing to the 4th-seeded Latvian, 7-5, 6-4, on Wednesday at the indoor Center Court of the Design Center Linz.
Eala seemed to have the upper hand early in the match, taking a 4-2 lead in the first set. However, Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, mounted a comeback, winning four straight games to clinch the opening set.
That momentum carried over into the second set, where Eala initially gained a 5-1 advantage with her patient, defensive approach. But Ostapenko quickly turned the tide by shortening the rallies and going for aggressive winners, dismantling Eala’s defensive game despite a few errors of her own.
The 20-year-old Eala struggled to maintain her consistency, allowing Ostapenko to chip away at her lead before closing out the match.
Ostapenko now advances to face Romania’s Elena Ruse in the quarterfinals, while Eala will look to regroup and prepare for next week’s WTA 500 Stuttgart event, where she hopes to bounce back on clay.
