Alex Eala Cruises to Victory Over Grabher in Linz Opener
After wrapping up her campaign at the Miami Open, Alex Eala quickly shifted gears to focus on the clay-court season—despite it being a surface she has long considered challenging.
Determined to improve, the 20-year-old returned to the Rafa Nadal Academy to refine her game in preparation for her next challenge.
That preparation paid off on Wednesday, as Eala defeated hometown favorite Julia Grabher, 6-4, 6-3, in the opening round of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz at the Design Center Linz.
Facing Austria’s top-ranked player on her preferred surface, Eala had to stay composed early on. Grabher, a clay-court specialist with multiple ITF and WTA 125 titles, came out aggressive and looked poised to break in the opening game.
But Eala kept her cool under pressure, saving two break points in a tense game that featured several deuces.
The first set turned into a test of resilience.
While Grabher breezed through her service games, Eala was consistently challenged, fending off break points in both the fifth and seventh games.
However, the world No. 46 from the Philippines delivered when it counted—breaking Grabher in the 10th game to secure the first set, 6-4.
Eala carried that momentum into the second set, though Grabher still pushed with her powerful forehand. The world No. 89 kept it close early on, but Eala gained control with a break in the fourth game and followed it up with a consolidation for a 4-1 lead.
Fueled by the support of the home crowd, Grabher mounted a brief comeback, pulling the score to 4-3. But Eala wasn’t rattled.
Regaining control, she won the final two games to close out the match in straight sets, taking the win in 1 hour and 43 minutes.
The victory sends Eala into the Round of 16, where she will face a tough challenge against fourth seed and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
This will be their third meeting, with Eala holding a 2-0 lead from their previous matchups in 2025 on hard and grass courts.
