Luxembourg City Edge Past Walferdange in Local Derby

Luxembourg City FC secured a 4-2 victory over Walferdange in an intense local derby played as part of pre-season friendlies on 23 July 2026. The match, hosted at Walferdange's local ground, served up plenty of goals and entertainment for the supporters in attendance.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 11th minute through striker David Turpel, who headed home a precise cross from the right wing. Walferdange responded quickly, equalising just seven minutes later when midfielder Pol Schmitz curled a free-kick over the wall and into the top corner. The game remained level until the half-hour mark, when Luxembourg City’s winger Dylan Kuete restored the lead with a drilled shot from inside the box.

Second Half Drama

Walferdange came out strongly after the break and levelled the score again through Jérôme Schumacher, who poked home from a corner. However, Luxembourg City showed their quality in the final quarter of the match. Substitute Edis Agovic put his side ahead for the third time in the 74th minute with a composed finish, and captain Chris Philipps sealed the win with a powerful strike from distance in the 88th minute.

The match was played in good spirit, though both sets of players showed the competitive edge expected of a local derby. Three yellow cards were handed out, all for tactical fouls.

Pre-Season Implications

For Luxembourg City FC, the win continues a strong run of pre-season form as they build towards the start of the BGL Ligue season. Manager Stéphane Léoni will be pleased with his side’s attacking variety, particularly the contributions from substitutes. Walferdange, meanwhile, will take positives from their ability to fight back twice, but defensive lapses remain a concern before their campaign begins.

Both teams are scheduled to play further friendlies before the competitive season kicks off in early August.
