Breidablik Women came from behind to defeat IBV Vestmannaeyjar Women 2-1 in the Iceland Besta-deild kvenna on Saturday night. The win keeps Breidablik in the hunt for the title and highlights their ability to grind out results even when not at their fluent best.

IBV took a surprise lead in the 12th minute, capitalising on a defensive mix-up and finishing calmly past the goalkeeper. The home crowd sensed an upset, but Breidablik gradually took control of possession and equalised on 39 minutes through a well-placed shot from the edge of the box.

The second half was largely one-way traffic. Breidablik dominated the ball and created several chances before finding the winner on 76 minutes, a low strike from inside the area after a neat build-up down the left. IBV pushed for an equaliser late on but could not find a way through a disciplined Breidablik defence.

Key moments

• 12th minute: IBV take the lead with a composed finish after a defensive error.
• 39th minute: Breidablik equalise with a precise shot from the edge of the penalty area.
• 76th minute: Breidablik score the winner, finishing off a slick passing move.
• 88th minute: IBV have a late chance from a corner, but the header goes wide.

Tactical story

Breidablik lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and looked to dominate possession from the start. Their midfielders rotated well, and the full-backs provided width, allowing the wingers to drift inside. IBV defended deep in a 4-4-2 block, looking to hit on the counter-attack. That approach worked early on, but as the game wore on, Breidablik’s patience and passing quality told.

IBV’s defenders worked hard, but they struggled to cope with Breidablik’s movement in the final third. The winning goal came from a quick combination on the left, and it was no more than Breidablik deserved for their second-half pressure.

Standout players

Breidablik’s central midfielder was the best player on the pitch, dictating the tempo and providing the assist for the equaliser. The left winger was also impressive, constantly beating her marker and delivering dangerous crosses. The centre-back pairing dealt well with IBV’s direct play in the closing stages.

For IBV, the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score down, and the goalscorer showed good composure for the opening goal. The captain led by example in midfield, but the team lacked the quality to hold on for a draw.

Season impact

The three points keep Breidablik Women firmly in the title race in the Besta-deild kvenna. Their ability to win away from home, even when trailing, is a hallmark of champions. With the season entering a crucial phase, Breidablik will be confident of maintaining their push for silverware.

IBV Vestmannaeyjar Women remain in mid-table, but they can take encouragement from a spirited performance against one of the league’s best sides. They will need to turn narrow defeats into draws or wins if they are to climb the standings. For Breidablik, this was a professional away display and another important step in their title challenge.
