Union Dietach 2–2 Bischofshofen (Extra Time Decides): Cup Thriller Ends in Dramatic Shootout
In one of the most exciting ties of the Austrian Cup first round, Union Dietach and Bischofshofen played out a pulsating 2–2 draw on 25 July 2026, with the match eventually settled by a penalty shootout. Both sides traded blows throughout the 120 minutes, leaving everything on the pitch in front of a passionate crowd.
Dietach took the lead in the 12th minute when a defensive mix-up allowed Michael Schager to tap in from close range. However, Bischofshofen responded brilliantly, equalising just before the half-hour mark through a well-placed header from Peter Sorger following a corner. The match remained deadlocked at 1–1 going into the break.
The second half saw end-to-end action. Dietach regained the lead in the 63rd minute when Fabian Lachinger curled a free kick over the wall and into the top corner. But Bischofshofen refused to lie down and forced extra time with a goal in the 87th minute, as substitute Lukas Oberascher prodded home from a goalmouth scramble. Extra time produced no further goals despite several near misses, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.
Bischofshofen held their nerve from the spot, converting all four of their kicks, while Dietach saw one penalty saved and another blaze over the bar. The final score at the end of the shootout was 4–2 in favor of Bischofshofen, who advance to the second round. For Union Dietach, the cup exit will be a bitter pill to swallow after such a valiant effort.
