Uganda Women U20 1–1 Ghana Women U20 | CAF U20 Women's African Nations Championship | 9 May 2026

Uganda and Ghana played out a tense 1–1 draw in their opening Group A match of the CAF U20 Women's African Nations Championship on Friday night. Both sides had chances to win, but a share of the spoils seemed a fair outcome at the Stade de la Réunification in Douala.

Fast-Paced First Half

The game started at a high tempo. Ghana, the more experienced side, controlled possession early on, but Uganda looked dangerous on the counter. The Black Princesses took the lead in the 28th minute through a well-worked move. Midfielder Mavis Owusu found striker Grace Asantewaa in the box, and she turned sharply before firing into the net.

Uganda responded well and almost equalised immediately, but Ghana’s goalkeeper made a fine save from a long-range effort. The Ugandans grew into the game as the half progressed and began to create more chances.

Uganda’s Fightback

The second half saw Uganda come out with renewed energy. They pushed Ghana back and were rewarded in the 58th minute. A corner kick was only half-cleared, and defender Grace Nakato volleyed the ball through a crowd of players and into the net to make it 1–1.

Ghana tried to regain the lead, introducing fresh legs from the bench, but Uganda’s defence held firm. Both teams had late opportunities – Uganda hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute, and Ghana’s striker missed a one-on-one chance in stoppage time.

Tournament Implications

  • Uganda Women U20 earn a valuable point in their first match of the championship, keeping their hopes of progressing alive.
  • Ghana Women U20 will be frustrated not to have taken all three points but remain strong contenders for the knockout stages.

Both teams now turn their attention to their next group fixtures. Uganda will look to build on this spirited display, while Ghana will aim to return to winning ways. The draw sets up an intriguing battle in Group A.
