Team Info
Clube Desportivo Nacional, commonly known as Nacional da Madeira, is a Portuguese football club based in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, competing in the Primeira Liga. Founded in 1910, the club plays at the Estádio da Madeira, wearing black and white stripes. Nacional is one of the three major clubs from Madeira, alongside Marítimo and Câmara de Lobos. The club's history is marked by a remarkable ascent in the 21st century, achieving promotion to the top flight and establishing itself as a solid Primeira Liga side. Their peak era came in the late 2000s under manager Manuel Machado, when they finished in an incredible 4th place in 2008-09, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League playoffs and subsequently enjoying several campaigns in the Europa League group stages. In the modern era, Nacional has battled between the first and second divisions but remains a proud institution. The team is known for its passionate island support and a direct, hard-working style of play.
