Match Info

St Mirren scraped past lower‑league East Kilbride in a seven‑goal thriller at the SMISA Stadium on 22 July, eventually prevailing 4‑3 in a pulsating Scottish League Cup Group E encounter. The Premiership side were pushed to the limit by the Lowland League outfit, who twice led before the home team’s quality and depth swung the contest in their favour.

East Kilbride Stun the Favourites

The visitors started brightly and took a shock lead in the eighth minute. A quick free‑kick caught St Mirren napping, allowing striker Paul Simpson to race through and slot calmly past goalkeeper Trevor Carson. The Buddies responded well, equalising in the 22nd minute through midfielder Greg Kiltie, who finished from close range after a corner was not cleared.

But East Kilbride refused to lie down. They regained the lead just before half‑time when winger Jamie Taggart’s cross was met by a powerful header from forward Thomas Quinn. St Mirren went into the break trailing 2‑1, leaving manager Stephen Robinson with much to ponder.

Second‑Half Drama

Robinson’s half‑time team talk had the desired effect. St Mirren came out with renewed urgency and levelled within two minutes of the restart, with striker Jonah Ayunga pouncing on a defensive error to make it 2‑2. However, East Kilbride showed remarkable resilience and went ahead for the third time in the 63rd minute. A set‑piece caused chaos in the St Mirren box, and defender Ryan McGeever turned the ball home from a yard out.

With their hopes of progression on the line, St Mirren threw caution to the wind. The equaliser arrived in the 75th minute when substitute Alex Greive volleyed home from a cross by goalkeeper Carson, who had pushed forward for a late free‑kick. The game then took another twist in the 82nd minute when Ayunga completed his brace, spinning on the edge of the box and smashing a shot into the bottom corner to make it 4‑3.

Survival Mode and Full‑Time

East Kilbride pushed for a late equaliser but St Mirren held firm, with Carson making a crucial save in stoppage time to deny Simpson a hat‑trick. The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes among the home players, who knew they had been given a severe test by a spirited East Kilbride side.

Group E Picture

St Mirren’s victory, albeit hard‑earned, gives them three points and keeps pace with Dundee United and Dunfermline Athletic at the top of Group E. For East Kilbride, the performance will inspire confidence despite the defeat. They showed they can compete with professional opposition and will look to bounce back in their next group match.

The Scottish League Cup once again delivered drama, and St Mirren’s 4‑3 win will be remembered as one of the most exciting matches of the opening round.
