Athletic Club Cruise to Friendly Win Over Sestao
Athletic Club began their preseason preparations with a comfortable 2-0 victory over local rivals Sestao in an international club friendly on 23 July 2026. The match, played at the Estadio Las Llanas, served as a test for both sides ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The Basque giants dominated proceedings from the opening whistle, fielding a mix of first-team regulars and promising academy talents. Athletic’s breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when winger Nico Williams cut inside from the left flank and curled a beautiful effort into the far corner, leaving the Sestao goalkeeper with no chance. The goal was a product of patient build-up play, with central midfielder Mikel Vesga orchestrating moves from deep.
Second Half Dominance Seals Victory
Ernesto Valverde’s side doubled their lead just before the hour mark. Substitute Aingeru Olabarrieta, a product of the Lezama academy, found space inside the box and fired a low shot past the home keeper after receiving a crisp pass from Iñaki Williams. The goal capped a polished display from the young forward, who impressed with his movement and work rate.
Sestao, competing in the Spanish fourth tier, offered little going forward but defended resolutely to keep the scoreline respectable. Their best opportunity came in the 71st minute when a free-kick from Alberto Redondo forced Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón into a diving save.
Preseason Progress for Athletic Club
The friendly was part of Athletic Club’s preparation for the upcoming La Liga season, where they will aim to build on a solid 2025–26 campaign. The match also served as a chance for Valverde to assess new signings and youth prospects. For Sestao, the experience of facing top-flight opposition will be valuable as they prepare for their own league fixtures.
Next up for Athletic is a trip to England to face Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on 27 July.
