Zenit St. Petersburg 2–1 FC Sochi
Russian Premier League – 10 May 2026

Zenit St. Petersburg continued their march towards another Russian Premier League title with a narrow 2-1 victory over a stubborn FC Sochi side at the Gazprom Arena. The defending champions had to dig deep after Sochi equalised just before the break, but a second-half winner from their Brazilian talisman ensured all three points stayed in the north.

Match Summary

Zenit dominated possession from the outset, carving out several early chances. Their pressure paid off in the 19th minute when Matvey Bardachev slotted home from a tight angle after a clever pass from Wendel. Sochi, however, grew in confidence and levelled just five minutes before halftime: a swift counter-attack ended with Kirill Kravtsov curling a fine shot past Mikhail Kerzhakov from the edge of the box.

Second-Half Drama

The second half was a more cagey affair, with Sochi sitting deep and looking to hit on the break. Zenit coach Sergei Semak introduced Mateo Cassierra after the hour mark, and the Colombian striker made an immediate impact. In the 68th minute, Cassierra latched onto a through ball from Claudinho, shrugged off a defender, and fired low into the far corner for what proved to be the winner.

Tactical Notes

Sochi’s game plan of compact defending and quick transitions worked well in spells, but they lacked the quality to sustain pressure after equalising. Zenit’s width, particularly from full-backs Douglas Santos and Vyacheslav Karavaev, created overloads that eventually wore down the visitors’ defence. The hosts finished with 62% possession and 14 shots to Sochi’s 7.

Player of the Match

Mateo Cassierra earned the plaudits for his match-winning cameo, but central midfielder Wendel was also outstanding, completing 93% of his passes and winning six duels in the middle third.

Table Context

The victory extended Zenit’s lead at the top of the Russian Premier League to seven points with only four rounds left, putting them firmly in control of their title defence. Sochi remain 11th, still four points clear of the relegation playoff spot but needing to improve results away from home.
