FC Neftci Baku 4-1 Safa Baku
Azerbaijan Premier League – Dominant Neftci cruise to emphatic city derby win

FC Neftci Baku produced a commanding performance to beat Safa Baku 4-1 in their Azerbaijan Premier League meeting, toppling their city rivals with a display of attacking power and relentless pressure. The result keeps Neftci firmly in the title conversation and underlines the growing gap between Azerbaijan’s established powerhouse and their more modest neighbours.

Match overview

From the first whistle, Neftci made their intentions clear. They pressed high, moved the ball quickly through midfield, and forced Safa Baku deep into their own half. The home side’s supporters were treated to an fast-paced start, with early pressure leading to a deserved opener inside the opening fifteen minutes. A well-timed run into the box met a precise cross, giving Neftci the perfect platform.

Safa Baku, who had prepared for a defensive battle, briefly equalised against the run of play with a counter-attacking strike that silenced the home crowd. But that moment of joy was short-lived as Neftci reasserted control before half-time with a sweeping move finished from close range.

Key moments

• Neftci opened the scoring with a header from a swinging corner — a goal that settled the home side’s nerves.
• Safa Baku stunned the hosts with an equaliser, finishing a rapid breakaway with calm precision.
• Neftci regained the lead through a tidy left-footed strike from the edge of the box shortly before the interval.
• Two further goals in the second half — one from a penalty and one from a breakaway — completed the rout.

Tactical story

Neftci’s 4-2-3-1 shape overloaded central areas and to Safa Baku’s midfield could rarely keep sustained possession. The full-backs pushed high to provide width, allowing the attacking midfielder to drift into dangerous pockets of space between the lines. That movement created consistent mismatches and meant Safa Baku’s back four were constantly forced to step out of position.

Safa Baku’s brief equaliser was a reminder of their threat on the break, but after the second Neftci goal, the visitors’ structure collapsed. By the final half-hour, Neftci were carving through the defence at will, and the scoreline accurately reflected their dominance.

Standout players and what it means

Neftci’s attacking quartet was in outstanding form. Their number nine led the line brilliantly, linking play and scoring one of the goals, while the left winger tormented the Safa Baku right-back all evening. At the back, Neftci’s captain marshalled the defensive line with authority, ensuring that the visitors never truly threatened after their equaliser.

For Neftci, this resounding derby victory serves as a statement of intent in the Azerbaijan Premier League. Safa Baku, meanwhile, will take heart from their brief resistance but must tighten up defensively to avoid further heavy defeats against the league’s top sides. Neftci’s goal difference and confidence are now both healthy as they aim to stay near the summit of the standings.
