Hafnarfjordur Women secured a vital home win in the Icelandic Besta-deild kvenna on Sunday evening, beating Thor KA Akureyri Women 2-1 to strengthen their bid for a higher league finish. With the season entering its decisive phase, the victory at Hafnarfjordur’s home ground separated two mid-table rivals and gave the hosts a timely confidence boost.

Match overview

The contest was tight and physically demanding from the first whistle. Hafnarfjordur enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening half-hour, but Thor KA Akureyri remained well-organised and dangerous on the counter-attack. The deadlock was broken just before the interval when the home side converted a well-worked move from the right flank. The goal settled the hosts, who came out strongly after the break and doubled their lead with another composed finish past the Thor KA goalkeeper.

Key moments

• First-half opener: Hafnarfjordur took advantage of a defensive lapse and slotted home from close range.
• Quick response denied: Thor KA Akureyri hit the crossbar shortly after falling behind and felt they should have been awarded a penalty just before half-time.
• Second goal: A well-taken effort midway through the second half appeared to put the game beyond the visitors.
• Late consolation: Thor KA pulled a goal back in the closing minutes, setting up a tense finale.

Tactical story

Hafnarfjordur’s work rate in midfield was decisive. They pressed aggressively when out of possession and looked to feed their wide players in transition. Thor KA Akureyri, by contrast, grew more direct in the second half and succeeded in creating pressure late on, but the hosts’ defensive block held firm when it mattered.

Standings impact

The result gives Hafnarfjordur three valuable points in the Besta-deild kvenna table and keeps them within touching distance of the top half. For Thor KA Akureyri, the narrow defeat provides encouragement, but they will need to turn promising performances into wins if they want to avoid a late-season slide.

With the league race intensifying, Hafnarfjordur will look to build on this result in their next fixture, while Thor KA Akureyri will head home eager to correct the defensive errors that proved costly on the evening.
