ACV Assen came from behind to beat Hoogeveen 2-1 in the Netherlands KNVB Cup on September 23, 2026, with a second-half winner completing a determined home comeback.

Match Overview

Hoogeveen started brightly and stunned the home crowd by taking the lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Their early goal came from a well-executed set piece, and for a period they looked comfortable, sitting deep and looking to spring counter-attacks. ACV Assen, however, grew into the game and gradually took control of possession.

The equaliser arrived before half-time and changed the mood completely. ACV Assen pressed higher after the break, forced Hoogeveen into defensive errors, and found the winning goal midway through the second half. The final stages were tense, but ACV managed the game well to secure their place in the next round.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Hoogeveen took the lead. A deep free-kick was flicked on at the near post and turned in from close range for 0-1.
• 39th minute: ACV Assen equalised. A patient build-up ended with a low cross from the right, and the arriving midfielder side-footed the ball into the bottom corner for 1-1.
• 67th minute: ACV scored the winner. A mistake in the Hoogeveen defence allowed the forward to steal in, round the goalkeeper, and slot the ball home for 2-1.
• 84th minute: Hoogeveen pushed for a leveller, but a goal-bound header was cleared off the line.
• 90+2 minutes: ACV's goalkeeper claimed a dangerous cross to snuff out the last chance of the match.

Tactical Story

Hoogeveen's early goal encouraged them to defend deeper, and for a while that approach frustrated ACV Assen. But ACV adjusted by pushing their full-backs higher and overloading the midfield, which allowed them to sustain attacks and pin Hoogeveen back. The equaliser came from exactly that pattern: patient circulation followed by a decisive cross.

In the second half, ACV's pressing became more aggressive. They targeted Hoogeveen's first touch in defence and were rewarded when a high turnover led to the winning goal. Hoogeveen tried to respond with long balls and set pieces, but ACV's defence held firm under late pressure.

Standout Players

ACV Assen's goalscoring midfielder was the driving force behind the comeback, covering ground and arriving in the box at the perfect moment. The winning goalscorer showed great awareness to punish a defensive lapse. For Hoogeveen, their goalkeeper made several sharp saves, and the set-piece taker was a constant threat from dead balls.

What It Means

The 2-1 win sends ACV Assen through in the Netherlands KNVB Cup and rewards their persistence after a difficult start. Hoogeveen will rue a strong opening period that they could not build on, but they pushed a competitive opponent all the way. ACV now advance with confidence and a place in the next round secured.
