Montenegro First League: The Top Tier of Montenegrin Football
The Montenegro First League, known as the Telekom 1. CFL for sponsorship reasons, is the top division of professional football in Montenegro. Established in 2006 following the country's independence, it is the pinnacle where clubs compete for the national championship title and coveted spots in UEFA club competitions. The league is known for its passionate fan bases and has been historically dominated by a few key clubs from the capital, Podgorica.
League Structure and Season Format
The First League operates with a standard double round-robin format. Ten teams play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 36 matches per season. The team that finishes with the most points at the end of the campaign is crowned champion of Montenegro. The season typically runs from late summer through the following spring, aligning with the European football calendar.
European Qualification and Relegation
Championship success brings the highest reward: entry into the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. The runners-up, and often the third-placed team, earn places in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. At the bottom of the table, the fight against relegation is intense. The last-placed team is automatically relegated to the Second League, while the team finishing ninth enters a promotion/relegation playoff against the Second League's runner-up, ensuring a dramatic end to the season for several clubs.
Dominant Forces and Current Landscape
Since the league's formation, FK Sutjeska Nikšić and FK Budućnost Podgorica have been the most successful clubs, frequently trading the title between them. Other clubs like OFK Titograd and FK Zeta have also challenged at the top. The current champions are FK Sutjeska, who continue to be a formidable force. The league is characterized by tight matches and a competitive balance, though the financial and sporting gap between the top two or three clubs and the rest remains a defining feature of Montenegrin football.
