FK Liepāja 2–1 BFC Daugavpils
Latvian Higher League – 18 May 2026
FK Liepāja continued their strong run in the Latvian Higher League with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over BFC Daugavpils on Monday evening. The result keeps Liepāja in the upper half of the table, while Daugavpils remain winless in their last four outings.
Fast start from Liepāja
The home side wasted no time asserting themselves. In just the 7th minute, Liepāja’s creative midfielder Mārtiņš Kļaviņš delivered a pinpoint free kick that was met by the head of Rihards Ivanovs, giving the hosts an early 1–0 lead. Daugavpils struggled to find their rhythm and often lost the ball in midfield under persistent pressure.
Liepāja doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. A rapid counterattack saw winger Artūrs Zjuzins sprint down the right flank and cut the ball back for striker Dāvis Ikaunieks, who finished first-time into the bottom corner. The stadium erupted as Liepāja took complete control of the match.
Daugavpils rally but fall short
BFC Daugavpils refused to fold. They grew into the game late in the first half and continued to press after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 64th minute when substitute Vladislavs Fjodorovs latched onto a loose ball inside the box and smashed it home to make it 2–1.
The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes. They created a handful of half-chances, but Liepāja’s defence, led by captain Kristaps Zommers, stood firm. Goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics also made a crucial save in the 82nd minute to preserve the lead.
Table implications
The win lifts Liepāja to fifth place in the Latvian Higher League, keeping them within touching distance of the European qualification spots. Daugavpils remain seventh, now five points behind their hosts. For Liepāja, this victory continued a strong home record – they have lost only once at the Daugava Stadium this season.
Attention now turns to next weekend when Liepāja travel to league leaders RFS, while Daugavpils host Valmiera in a crucial midtable clash.
