Empoli 0-2 Vicenza: Clinical Away Performance Lifts Vicenza in Italian Serie B

Vicenza produced a disciplined and efficient away display to beat Empoli 0-2 in Italian Serie B. Two well-timed goals and a stubborn defensive performance gave the visitors all three points, while Empoli were left to rue a lack of precision in the final third.

The match was a classic Serie B contest: compact, tactical and decided by small margins. Empoli saw plenty of the ball, but Vicenza defended with organisation and punished the home side on the break.

Match overview

Empoli started with intent, pushing their full-backs high and trying to create overloads in wide areas. The home side moved the ball patiently, but Vicenza’s midfield stayed compact and forced them into sideways passes. The visitors were happy to concede possession in less dangerous areas and wait for their moments to counter.

The opening goal came midway through the first half. Vicenza won the ball in midfield and moved it forward quickly, with a sharp pass releasing an attacker into the box. The finish was calm and precise, giving Empoli’s goalkeeper little chance. The goal changed the rhythm of the game, forcing Empoli to commit more players forward.

• Final score: Empoli 0-2 Vicenza
• Competition: Italian Serie B
• Clean sheet: Vicenza
• Key moment: Vicenza’s second goal late in the match

Key moments

Empoli’s best spell came shortly after half-time. They increased the tempo, delivered more crosses into the box and forced Vicenza into a series of defensive clearances. A header from a corner flashed wide, and a low shot from the edge of the area was blocked by a well-positioned defender. The equaliser felt close, but Vicenza’s back line held firm.

The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages. Empoli pushed numbers forward in search of a leveller, and Vicenza broke through the vacant spaces left behind. A quick transition ended with a composed finish into the bottom corner, sealing the win and ending the home side’s resistance.

Tactical story

Vicenza’s 4-4-2 shape without the ball was the foundation of their success. The two banks of four stayed close together, limiting space between the lines and forcing Empoli to play wide. When the home side crossed, Vicenza’s centre-backs attacked the ball aggressively and cleared their lines.

With possession, Vicenza were direct and purposeful. They did not need long spells of passing to create chances; instead, they looked for forward runs and second balls. Empoli, by contrast, struggled to turn territorial dominance into clear opportunities, and their final ball was often cut out by a crowded penalty area.

Standout performers

Vicenza’s goalkeeper produced a composed display, dealing confidently with crosses and making one important save at the start of the second half. The midfield also deserved credit for their work rate, pressing at the right moments and tracking runners when Empoli pushed forward.

Empoli’s most dangerous player was their wide attacker, who repeatedly tried to create something from the left flank. However, too many of the home side’s attacks ended with a blocked shot or an overhit cross, allowing Vicenza to clear and regroup.

What the result means

The win is a significant boost for Vicenza’s Serie B campaign, strengthening their position in the standings and underlining their ability to win away from home. The clean sheet will be particularly pleasing for the coaching staff, as it came against a team capable of controlling possession.

For Empoli, the defeat is a reminder that dominance in the ball does not guarantee results. They will need to improve their movement inside the box and find more creative solutions against compact defences. The Serie B table remains tightly packed, and both sides will know that consistency will be crucial as the season progresses.
