Debreceni VSC survived a genuine scare in the Magyar Kupa on Saturday night, coming away from Godollo with a 3-2 victory in a tie that was far closer than the gap between the two clubs' divisions would suggest.

• Match: Godollo 2-3 Debreceni VSC
• Competition: Magyar Kupa (Hungary Cup)
• Kick-off: 21:00, 12 September 2026
• Venue: Godollo

Match Overview

Loki travelled as favourites and started like a team expecting to control the game, but Godollo had clearly done their homework. The hosts pressed in organised banks, denied space in central midfield and looked to spring forward quickly whenever possession turned over — a plan that produced two goals and a nervous final half hour for the visitors.

Debrecen's superior technical quality eventually told, particularly in wide areas where their full-backs overlapped at will. But the win was earned through resilience rather than comfort, and Godollo's players left the pitch to warm applause from their own supporters.

Key Moments

• Opening goal: Debrecen struck first with a well-worked move, only for Godollo to respond with a sharp equaliser that lifted the home crowd.
• Momentum swing: The hosts briefly looked the better side, turning a period of pressure into a second goal and forcing Debrecen to chase the game.
• Decisive response: The visitors regrouped, raised the tempo and restored their advantage with the kind of goal that top-flight sides produce when they need one most.
• Late game management: The closing minutes were scrappy, with Debrecen slowing the game down and taking the sting out of every Godollo attack.

Standout Performers

Debrecen's attacking players carried the threat, with the front two combining effectively and the midfield dictating the tempo once their side regained the lead. The goalkeeper also made one crucial intervention late on that protected the result.

Godollo's midfield engine and their centre-back pairing were excellent for long spells, and both goals came from exactly the kind of disciplined, coordinated play the coaching staff have been building toward. Their performance was a strong advertisement for the depth of Hungarian football below the top flight.

What It Means

Debreceni VSC progress to the next round, and the club — a seven-time Hungarian league champion with a proud Magyar Kupa history — will be relieved to have avoided the kind of early-round upset that has undone bigger clubs in this competition before. Cup ties away at motivated lower-division sides are rarely straightforward, and this one served as a useful reminder.

For Godollo, elimination will sting because a draw or a small slice of luck might have produced a famous result. Yet the display itself was a statement: the side competed on equal terms with top-flight opposition for long stretches and showed the ambition that makes the Magyar Kupa one of the most watchable competitions in the region.

Bottom line: A five-goal thriller in which Debrecen's quality edged out Godollo's organisation, and the favourites just about kept their cup hopes alive.
