German Bundesliga 2
2025-2026
League Info
The 2. Bundesliga is Germany's second-tier professional football league, serving as the crucial gateway between the elite Bundesliga and the lower professional and semi-professional divisions. It is a highly competitive league in its own right, known for its unpredictability, intense promotion battles, and role as a proving ground for future Bundesliga stars and coaches.
The league was founded in 1974, one decade after the establishment of the top flight, to create a unified national second division. Like the Bundesliga, it is operated by the DFL from Frankfurt. Its primary competition is the race for promotion to the Bundesliga, with the fight to avoid relegation to the 3. Liga being equally fierce.
The 2. Bundesliga also features 18 teams playing a 34-match double round-robin schedule. The top two teams earn automatic promotion to the Bundesliga. The third-place team enters a two-legged relegation playoff against the 16th-placed team from the Bundesliga for a chance at top-flight football. The bottom two teams are relegated directly to the 3. Liga, while the 16th-placed team faces a playoff against the third-place team from the third division.
While it lacks the global commercial reach of the Bundesliga, the 2. Bundesliga has a dedicated domestic following and is a hotbed of talent development. Its matches are often high-stakes and dramatic. The league does not have a draft system but relies on club academies and shrewd transfers. The ultimate award is promotion, but the league also crowns its own top scorer and recognizes players of the season.
