Ferencvarosi TC 1 – 0 Sabah FC | International Club Friendly | 28 June 2026
Hungarian champions Ferencvarosi TC continued their pre-season preparations with a narrow 1-0 victory over Azerbaijani side Sabah FC in a tightly contested friendly played at the Groupama Arena. The match provided both teams with valuable fitness minutes and tactical sharpening ahead of their respective domestic campaigns.
Controlled Contest From the Off
Ferencvaros dominated possession from the start, using their technical midfield to dictate the tempo. Sabah FC, organised and compact, looked to hit on the break and caused a few nervous moments with their pace on the wings. The first half ended goalless despite several half-chances for the hosts, with Sabah’s goalkeeper making a sharp save to deny a curling effort from the edge of the area.
The Hungarian side’s best chance before the interval came when a header from a corner was cleared off the line by a Sabah defender.
Deciding Moment
The solitary goal arrived in the 58th minute. A flowing move involving a switch of play to the left flank resulted in a low cross that was met by Ferencvaros’s striker, who swept the ball home from six yards out. The goal was a reward for sustained pressure, and Sabah struggled to create an equaliser despite introducing fresh legs.
The Azerbaijani side nearly grabbed a dramatic draw deep into stoppage time, but a powerful long-range shot rattled the crossbar and bounced to safety.
Manager’s Assessment
Ferencvaros manager used the friendly to test a mix of senior players and academy prospects. The clean sheet will be particularly pleasing, with the defensive unit looking well-drilled in their positioning. Sabah FC, meanwhile, will take heart from a disciplined defensive display and the occasional threat they posed on the counter.
What’s Next
Both clubs are expected to play further friendlies in the coming days as they build towards the start of the 2026-27 season. Ferencvaros will aim to defend their Hungarian league title, while Sabah FC are preparing for the new Azerbaijani Premier League campaign.
